Beans are a staple vegetable for many gardeners. Bean seeds covers a wide range of vegetables including broad beans, runner beans and French beans. (One family of beans that goes under a multitude of names; French, Dwarf, String and Snap beans more often that not refer to the same thing).
Runner beans are very popular for home growing. The ground should be prepared in August. Outdoor sowings can be made in May, or early sowings can be made under glass from April.
French bean seeds can be sown outside from May onwards or sow early under glass from April to June.
Autumn varieties of Broad beans can be sown direct into the plot from October to November with crop protection. Later sowings can be made in March or April directly into the sowing site.
These easy to grow vegetables, are almost always guaranteed to reward you with a heavy crop of beans. If this happens why not give them away to friends or family. Alternatively keep the freezer well stocked, then you can enjoy delicious succulent and tasty beans whenever you fancy them, you may even want some for your breakfast!

TOP TIP FOR RUNNER BEANS: Experimental trials found that leaving spacings of 18 inches between each cane, and having 3 plants on each cane produces the best yields!
