Sweet Pea Plants FAQ
26 March 2025Cultural leaflets are sent out with our Sweet Pea plug plants, but here are our most frequently asked questions answered:
Can the plants be left in the strip until ready for planting? – Yes, they will be ok for up to 2 weeks if kept moist, but not wet. During this period the plants can be gradually hardened off in a sheltered place outside on nice days, or in a cold frame or cold greenhouse.
Do I need to pot on before planting out? – No, the plants can be carefully teased apart and then planted in their final planting positions.
Can the Dwarf Cupid Mix be planted in a container or basket? – Yes, depending on basket or container size - We recommend a 15in diameter basket or container, and plant 5-6 plants. Use a good multipurpose or potting compost in the containers as Sweet Peas are hungry feeders
Do the Spencer waved or Old Spice varieties need support to grow? – Yes these are climbing varieties, and can be grown up canes or netting. If growing up canes plants will require tying in as they grow.
Do plants need pinching out? – Yes to encourage bushy plants, you can pinch out the growing tip as this will encourage plants to bush out and produce more stems and intern more flowers.
