Where to Sow Tomatoes, Peppers and Aubergine

Sow seeds underglass 0.5cm(1/4 in) deep in pots or trays of good seed sowing compost and lightly cover with a sprinkling of vermiculite or compost. Place containers in a propagator at a temperature of 18–21°C.

What to do Next

Prick out seedlings, once large enough to handle, into 9cm (3 1/2in) pots. Transplant to the greenhouse border soil, or individual large pots, or 3 plants per growbag. Tomato plants will require side shoots removed and will need to be tied to a support as they grow for the best yields. Water and feed plants regularly all plants with a high potash feed once the first truss has set.

How to Sow Cuucmbers

Sow seed on edge to prevent rotting 1.5cm (1/2”) deep in individual 9cm(3 1/2in) pots under glass at a constant day and night temperature of 21°C. As soon as the seedlings have formed 3 true leaves, transplant into 15cm (6”) pots. When the plants are about 10cm (4”) tall, plant out into final positions into large pots or growbags underglass. Provide some form of support and tie in stems as required.

Handy Tip

If growing in a small greenhouse, these can get quite warm during the summer months. Always ventilate well and maybe add a little shading to the glass to protect the crops.
