Carrot Flyaway ORGANIC SEED
Shows good tolerance to to carrot fly as it is less attractive to the egg-laying flies. A mid-season, stump rooted variety with excellent colour, smooth skin, broad shoulders, and a sweet flavour.
Carrot Flyaway was bred to show resistance to carrot fly but unfortunately is not immune to attack. Being such a dry year, carrot fly appear to be about sooner.
If only carrot flyaway is grown and if there is carrot fly in the area they will still attack the variety. To overcome this, another variety like Early Nantes should be grown alongside, as this acts as a sacrificial crop and the Carrot fly will prefer to attack this variety and leave the row of Carrot Flyaway alone. Alternatively carrots should be grown under enviromesh to stop them getting to the crop.
It is believed that the carrot was first cultivated in the area now known as Afghanistan thousands of years ago as a small forked purple or yellow root with a woody and bitter flavour, resembling nothing of the carrot we know today.
Purple, red, yellow and white carrots were cultivated long before the appearance of the now popular orange carrot, which was developed and stabilised by Dutch growers in the 16th and 17th centuries.
