Field poppies are very slender branched annuals with hairy stems and feathery leaves as the base of each stem. The flowers are large and vivid scarlet with a black base. Naturally occurs as a weed in light cultivated soils, especially corn fields. An ideal flower for both the flower garden and allotment, as the scarlet displays attract many pollinators.
